Navis | Scrolling Through Life

Working with young people is a rewarding and inspiring mission, made possible by the commitment of many dedicated volunteers, Youth Animators, Leaders, and School Pastoral Teams across Gozo.

At the same time, accompanying young people today comes with its own realities and challenges. Those involved in youth ministry often face questions, experiences, and situations that are best explored together. This is why, for the past 5 years, KDŻG has organised Navis; an annual gathering that brings together those involved in working with young people across Gozo.

The name Navis, meaning “boat” in Latin, reflects the spirit of the gathering: we are not journeying alone. We are part of a community, travelling together with Jesus and supporting one another along the way.

Understanding the world of social media

Our main sessions this year will be led by Clive Bonnici and will focus on one of the most significant influences in the lives of young people today: social media.

Session 1

Understanding Social Media: Why It Matters to Young People

Social media has become an important part of how young people communicate, have fun, express themselves, develop their identity, and build relationships.

But what makes these platforms so appealing to young people?

In this session, we will take a closer look at the social and cultural changes that have shaped young people’s relationship with the digital world. We will explore the needs that social media can meet during adolescence and consider why young people are drawn to these platforms in the first place.

Rather than approaching social media with fear or judgement, this session invites us to approach it with curiosity, understanding, and empathy.

By gaining a better understanding of the digital world young people inhabit, we can become better equipped to accompany them within it.

Session 2

Social Media, Mental Health and the Role of Youth Workers and Leaders

The second session will build on these ideas by exploring the connection between social media and young people’s mental health and wellbeing.

We will look at some of the issues that can arise from young people’s online experiences, including anxiety, depression, body image, attention, identity, and loneliness.

Drawing on current research and developmental psychology, we will reflect on the role that adults can play in supporting young people as they navigate this increasingly digital world.

In particular, we will consider how youth workers and leaders can create environments that encourage presence, play, autonomy, meaningful relationships, reflection, and genuine face-to-face connection.

The aim is not simply to focus on what young people should do less of, but to consider what they need more of in order to grow, flourish, and develop in healthy ways.

Time for fellowship

After the sessions, we will have time to relax, share some food, and enjoy each other’s company.

Navis is not only about learning. It is also about community.

It is a chance to meet others who are walking a similar path, share experiences and ideas, talk about the challenges we encounter, and encourage one another in our mission.
